WHITE PAPER:

How to Defeat Spam
Should I use the Opt-out function ?

Should I use an email's “opt-out" function?

One last question regarding spam is “Should I use the “opt-out” function that usually is at the end of a spam email?

The opt-out is something that is required by law. Not receiving further email from the sender by using this function sound good. However, it really depends upon the scruples of the spammer…Legally, they can’t send you more mail.

But it doesn't’t stop them from providing that email address to another spammer or confirming that, yes, this is a real email address…so I can send more mail under a different identity.

We recommend only using the opt-out function if the email comes from a large and verifiable source, such as a large retailer (e.g. Sears, Target, Borders Books and Records, etc.).
